What is OHRI Research Day?
Research Day is a conference that celebrates research conducted by trainees at The Ottawa Hospital, in partnership with the University of Ottawa. It includes oral and poster presentations, as well as keynote talks by guest speakers.
Who should attend?
Everyone at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute can attend. Staff of The Ottawa Hospital with an interest in research can also attend provided they have permission from their supervisor.
How do I register?
Register through the OHRI Events System. If this is your first time attending an OHRI event, you must create an account in the OHRI Events system. Anyone with an OHRI, TOH, uOttawa, Bruyère, Ottawa Heart Institute or CHEO e-mail address can create an account. E-mail irissupport@ohri.zendesk.com with any technical issues.
Do I need to register if I’m not submitting an abstract?
Yes! All attendees must register.
Why should I go?
You can learn what research colleagues in other areas are working on and identify ways that you might collaborate. It’s also a great venue for networking. If you’re a trainee, you can present your research and get feedback on it, and maybe even win a prize.
Can I submit an abstract?
Everyone at The Ottawa Hospital/ Research Institute can submit an abstract, including trainees of affiliate investigators.
Can I compete in the oral or poster competition?
The following categories are eligible for competition. Note that anyone who gave an oral last year is not eligible to present an oral this year. Those chosen for an oral will not present a poster.
- Oral presentation awards: $250 (Two Gold Awards – Discovery Research and Clinical and Applied Health Research), $200 (Silver Award), $150 (Bronze Award)
- Eligible: undergrads, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, medical students, residents. Being selected to give an oral presentation is an honour trainees can proudly place on their CV
- Postdoctoral and clinical fellow poster awards: $250 (Two Gold Awards – Clinical and Applied Health Research and Discovery Research), $200 (Silver Award), $150 (Bronze Award)
- Eligible: postdoctoral and clinical fellows
- PhD poster awards: $250 (Two Gold Awards – Discovery Research and Clinical and Applied Health Research), $200 (Silver Award), $150 (Bronze Award), $125 (Honorable Mention)
- Eligible: PhD and MD/PhDs students
- Master’s student and resident poster awards: $250 (Two Gold Awards – Clinical and Applied Health Research and Discovery Research), $200 (Silver Award), $150 (Bronze Award), $125 (Honorable Mention)
- Eligible: MSc students, medical students and residents
- Undergrad poster: $250
- Eligible: 4th year honours, co-op students
* Clinical and applied health research focuses on people or data from people. Trainees must indicate they are presenting a clinical and applied health research abstract when they register.
Can I present a poster if I’m not eligible for the poster competition?
Yes.
What is expected of oral presenters?
We ask trainees to make a special effort to ensure that their oral presentations are accessible to all non-specialists in the audience, including basic and clinical scientists as well as trainees and staff. Presenters are expected to attend a two-hour workshop to help them polish their presentation. Presenters must be available IN PERSON for their presentation. Substitute presenters will not be eligible for awards.
Do I have to present a poster or an oral presentation to attend?
No, you do not have to present to attend. Many people just come to learn and network.
Can 1 abstract be presented as both a poster and an oral?
The same project can be presented by two presenters, but they each have to draft their own abstract.

I can no longer attend. Can someone else present my poster for me?
Yes, someone else can present your poster. They will not be eligible for awards.
Do I have to use the OHRI poster template?
No. We only provide it in case you’re printing a new poster and looking for template ideas. All existing posters are welcome, provided they are not larger than 4’ by 4’.
Does OHRI cover costs for poster printing?
No. OHRI does not cover the cost of poster printing. Poster printing will be borne either by the presenter or their supervisor. Posters can be printed at TOH printing service or externally.
How do I print my poster with TOH printing service?
Please send an email to Printing-Imprimerie@toh.ca supplying the following:
- TOH Cost center number for billing (we do not accept other forms of payment)
- Please allow 1 week to process the order due to high volume
- Please provide final size you would like
- Please supply the file in original format and pdf if possible
- Please provide the due date required
Is there a cost to attend?
This event is free for members of The Ottawa Hospital and the Research Institute. However, registration is mandatory.
When is the deadline to register?
The deadline to register and to submit an abstract is NOON,
Monday, September 30th, however, we may have to close registration early if we reach the capacity limit of the venue. If you register early, you can continue to log back in and edit your abstract up until the deadline.
